Tofana de Rozes

Bologna

The climb of Tofana di Rozes (3225 metres) is a via ferrata (Via Giovanni Lipella).
The map below shows my route

This is a mountainhiking path that climbs and has ladders and/or wire rope in steep or dangerous sections so that climbers can clip into this system to protect against a dangerous (possibly fatal) fall. A climbing harness and a clipping system are used. This is explained well on the Petzl Web site. They make the Zyper-Y which is made for this type of activity. It is suggested to take gloves, helmet, sturdy hiking boots, clothes for unexpected storms, headlamp and some food and water. If you expect any snowfields take ice axe, crampons, rope, slings and carabiners.

It starts with a walk up from Rifugio Dibona (for those GPS fans Lat 46.5329322N Long 12.0701962E and 6631feet) at 2025 metres..

It gets to a first ladder after 1 hour of walking to 2420 metres..

The top of the ladder has a good view

There is an old ladder there parts are from the war (WWII).

There is then an 800 meter tunnel.(Alpini Tunnel).....bring your own headlamp.

The top of the tunnel lets out to a great view.

Unfortunately in mid June there were some unexpected snowfields even relatively low.

"not difficult but dangerous"

I was lucky to meet up with four climbers from Poland who let me tag onto their rope and use an axe. I wasn't prepared for this. Next time I go I'll take more equipment. Thanks again to Marek and friends for the shared rope.

Don't slip.

Rockclimbing. I would call this pretty easy climbing ....YDS 5.3
The Dolomites are very craggy broken up rock with lots of holds.

The last snowfield .

Rifugio Cantore...can you see it.

Alpenglow

Straggling down ...almost dark.

Minutes later there was no light. We walked out in the dark (by headlamp)...my usual near epic.
